Large Trade Shows set to Return to Las Vegas in July

As trade shows start to trickle back into the city, the next couple of months should give us a much better idea where our economy is heading and whether or not our convention industry will be returning to normal anytime soon.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, prior to COVID in 2019, spending by visitors attending conventions directly supported 43,500 jobs, $2.0 billion in wages and economic output of $6.6 billion. When including indirect and induced impacts, the totals increase to 67,600 jobs, $3.1 billion in wages and $11.4 billion of total economic output.

In 2019, over 15% of our tourist volume came directly from conventions. Business and convention visitors help boost occupancy and room rates during midweek periods, which is one of the major reasons we saw so many hotels shutdown their hotel operations during midweek dates in 2020 and early 2021. Even today, many of the restaurants and small businesses that depend on this traffic are still closed or have limited operating hours midweek.
